Purple Flag
Bournemouth is proud to have been accredited with a Purple Flag for Night Time Economy – the town now has blue flags for beaches, green flags for parks and a purple flag for the night time economy! This prestigious award demonstrates the town’s ambitions to develop and improve the night time economy, encouraging a broad outlook on how the town is presented at night and tackling all aspects from cleanliness to access and transport, street lighting to signage, entertainment variety and choice of styles in bars, clubs and restaurants. There is much more to do, and with the pressure and encouragement created through the Purple Flag Award, so much more that can be achieved.
The Purple Flag was awarded after a visit to the town by a team of inspectors who praised the way the Council, Police and Townwatch are delivering a safe, clean and pleasant night time environment. The inspectors were particularly impressed with the well managed public spaces, including the Gardens, and how the various night time activities are managed, such as taxi marshals, the Safe Bus, and the way in which partnership working is effectively regulating a safe night time experience in the town.
Daniel McGrath, ATCM Purple Flag Coordinator, said; “Purple Flag provides recognition for places seeking to raise standards and improve the quality of peoples’ experiences of towns and cities at night; it demonstrates that our towns at night can be places for everyone, that are clean and safe , with great public spaces, cultural attractions and unique identities. The visiting assessors in Bournemouth were delighted to reward the partnership, for their efforts and commitment to these aims, with the Purple Flag award.”
Councillor Peter Charon, Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, said;
“The recent accolade means that residents can be reassured that the highest standards are being delivered across the town. Public safety has always been high on the Council’s agenda and together with our Partners our team work around the clock to ensure the town is a clean and safe environment for everyone to enjoy. We are proud that the joint efforts of our team working hard with our partners have been recognised by this top award.
This is a particularly exciting achievement for Bournemouth as it makes us the first town in the country to fly all three flags. Residents and visitors can enjoy our top class beaches, play in our parks and open spaces, and now stay and enjoy an award winning night time experience for all the family.
Bournemouth has a variety of evening entertainment for all ages, from the Children’s Enchanted Nights in the Gardens, Family Friday Fiesta, to this year’s Night Air Show. I would invite anyone who has not been into Bournemouth after sunset to come and check it out and make the most of our award winning town.”
