The Beer Sales
I though it was all bad news in the beer sector until I read the 2008 report from the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). 10.7% annual volume growth in 2007 and local beer has been outperforming the total beer market over the last five years with progressively higher change rates! No wonder Carlsberg has dumped the Tetleys product and it does seem that national beer brands are generally perceived as nothing special.
People have been banging on about local produce in food and drink being the way forward, including Mr Ramsay, with low distribution costs and better quality just two of the outcomes. The environmental and ethical concerns are building fast, green is good and reducing carbon footprint is a top topic. Maybe there is an opportunity to back this fast developing market and putting it on an urban scale could create a strong promotional image “Bournemouth Pushes Local Beer”, “More Choice, More Quality, Bournemouth’s Great Beer Offer”. Then that could be linked to a better local food offer, at least one ‘local ingredients only’ dish in every restaurant. Tastes good to me.
