Christmas Spirit
It's never so easy to get in to the Christmas spirit if you work in the hospitality industry, dispensing seasonal food and drink to people who are winding down towards the New Year celebrations and the 1000th rendition of Slades Merry Christmas is churning away inside your head. But let's not be negative, it's all over in a flash, hopefully plenty of cash in the till drawer, loads of happy customers who can't wait to return and maybe some leisure recovery time in January! In the meantime you can ponder on potential change for the new year and maybe a new government. What changes are afoot in the alcohol licensing world and what do you think can be improved. Should late opening continue to the early hours? How can we manage the night time sector better? Should beer be exempt from future taxation hikes to encourage a strong return to that sector? Alternatively should high abv drinks be penalised with higher taxation levels, especially the ready to drink types? Bit of a quandary if you've just opened a bottle of Tactical Nuclear Penguin, a beer with an abv of 32%! There's a lot to think about if we want to do things better and make sure that Bournemouth is a great place for people to enjoy their hard earned leisure time, a place that's fun, safe and vibrant. So many issues, so many ideas, so many solutions - it's bound to make 2010 an interesting year. (30 November 2009)

Bournemouth now has blue flags for beaches, green flags for parks and a purple flag for the night time economy!
